Today, in our drawing tutorial, we will learn how to draw a pile of books. Our pile is just 2 books, but still, it is an interesting object to draw.
Step 1. Outline the axes of the sides of the books
In the first step, draw the lines to outline the axes of our book slides. The goal is to position the books correctly vs. each other.
Step 2. Draw the rounded lines for the spines and text blocks of the books
Continue adding lines to outline the shape of the top book. Then, draw rounded lines to show the spines of our books. Also, we draw rounded lines for text blocks.
Step 3. Draw the inner parts of the text blocks and covers
Next, draw the bottom parts of the text blocks. Then, start shading the parts next to the books. In our case, the light source is behind the books, so the shades are towards us.
Step 4. Draw the raised bands on book spines and detail the text blocks
In this step, draw the raised bands on the spines of our books.
Raised bands on an old book's spines have a purpose. Those bumps, known as raised bands, are where the binding leather covers the cords over which the book's leaves were sewn.
Next, start drawing the text blocks' page texture and shading the book spines.
Step 5. Continue to draw out text bands and add shading to the drawing
In this step, we add the little details. We need to add volume to our raised bands. We need to bevel them, and this can be achieved by adding the little rounded lines on top and bottom of our raised bands. We also draw out the page texture to the text band of our top book. Lastly, we want to show that our books are on the table, so we want to add a line to show the table's edge.
Step 6. Finalize the drawing of the pile of books with shading and small details
In this step, we want to add decorative elements to the cover of the top book. You can choose a different drawing for your cover. Also, we need to add shades next to the books. There are a few spots where the shading is particularly dark. We denote those with black shading.
